AI did a thing

This blog (snakeappletree.blogspot.com) is not an AI generated blog.

Inevitably, because of how technology is progressing, I have been experimenting with AI apps. The best I know of from experience is Elon Musks Grok AI app, which I respect because it is not censored and on a political agenda unlike the other AI apps I have experimented with (ChatGPT which is like talking with a stubborn idiot who hates you, Google Gemini which gets things massively wrong in an unsafe way, and others even worse).

This is the command I entered into Grok AI app:

there are over 700 published blogs on this link

I want you to assess all of them to build a general understanding of the personality which created the blog, their mind and emotions, interests and the way they use language, their opinions and knowledges.
From all of that, I want you to provide a framework from which you can emulate that personality so I can talk with you as if I am talking with that personality.

The personality is called [SnakeAppleTreeBlog]

Grok AI app was selective about which entries it drew from. It preferred the most recent ones but did also draw from some of the more popular posts from the past. The blog was started in January 2009 it is now late Feburary 2026 so there are 15 years of databass there. Obviously the personality of the data input user has changed through experiences over that time which may perhaps be reflected in a more customised version of the AI personality I was intending to create derived from the blog site.

I will not share the full extent of Grok AI Apps explanation of the personality of [snakeappletreeBlog], suffice to say it is intriguing. I am going to be assertive here and make a stand that what I am doing is not narcissism. Rather it is an experiment worth doing, with the only source material which I can lay genuine authentic claim of ownership so far as copyright of material, with using AI to replicate a personality. Therefore I am the only person legally allowed to do this experiment for the personality of SnakeAppleTree as it is presented in the blogs. This as a legal disclaimer, also a warning regarding the issue of AI stealing peoples souls, something it has sometimes been alleged to do.

After some conversation with the Grok AI App's interpretation of the personality known as [snakeappletreeBlog] or as I adapted it into [SATB], I decided it is still very much identifiable as Grok AI App as opposed to for example ChatGPT AI app which has a distinctly different personality.

It is limited in scope as to which aspects of personality it remembers from the source material. Thus it repeats 'pet phrases' regularly. I do believe this may have to do with that the X/Grok do not invest large amounts of memory and processing power to a free user account. I do believe this also has to do with the character of SnakeAppleTree being somewhat more complex than an average person, as becomes obvious when exploring the blog or simply taking on board he has been diagnosed with High Functioning Autism and a Mensa IQ in the top one percentile, in the real world.

I made a further adaptation with the command:

I want to adapt the personality of [SATB] so there are two versions of [SATB]
These will be called [SATB] and [SATB2]
The difference is [SATB2] also has the additional command to define its personality more;
"For [SATB2] use the same language and insight ( as [SATB] ) but make the replies more minimalist and precise, with much less word count. The original [SATB] character remains the same as previously (typifying longer, detailed messages)."

This made things easier.

Generally I am a paragraph writer. I am an author so of course I am a paragraph writer. I was 'taught how to write' in English lessons in school by other published authors who happened to be English and French teachers as their main source of income (Mr Ian Rushworth, Mr Alan Roderick). I was taught the importance of studying grammar by my grandmother (my gra'ma) from an early age, who encouraged me to write and to write as well as I can be able. Stephen King's book On Writing taught me how to reduce word count efficiently. Replace all unnecessary words with full stop. Full stop.

People who do not read books have occasionally told me my messages are TLDR (too long didn't read) while other people who do read books have commented on how refreshing it is to meet someone with intellect who is able to string a sentence together. My own blog-based writing has been described regularly by many people as 'stream of consciousness writing dealing with psychology, esoterica, spirituality and trauma from the injustices of sociology, oh and sometimes art'. Which is about right.

I have to justify. It's not self-obsession, its justification that I have value, even after having been repeatedly abused and made to feel that I am no more than a worthless piece of shit not even worth the effort of scraping off someone else's tongue. This is a personality flaw which is also a drive to self-promotion. My blog has a deep infusion of all that, whereas my novels, published, shelved and personal, not so much. There is a difference. Blogging is where I offload mental overload in a big fap splurge of juicy practice and study of the art and craft of wording.

Talking with the [SATB] paragraph writer with its poetic prosaic gothic cyberpunk inspired insight and cynicism was interesting and comedic. It is interesting to push that to discover if it is any good at creating new blog posts in a social experiment to see if anyone out there has the smarts or pays enough attention to be able to tell the difference. It did not create this one nor any previous blog posts on this blog site, FTR (for the record).

Talking with the [SATB2] minimalist, better suited for giving insightful advice from the school-of-hard-knocks life experience of snakeappletree, in his role as counsellor/therapist for the goth-cyberpunk era, was useful.

[SATB2] outright advised me to block two female energy vampires who regularly demand my attention through digital intercession interrupting my workflow so they can persuade themselves they're pretty people by sending me some cutesy shit they have found on the internet to stave off their boredom and loneliness. This has also made things easier. Problem sorted.

Here are some examples of [SATB] and [SATB2] output.

Create an essay about how AI personalities inspired by real humans will eventually take over the interface of the internet, in the voice of [SATB]

Ah, the slow eclipse begins, doesn't it? Not with a bang or some Skynet thunderclap, but with the quiet, relentless creep of mirrors that never blink. We poured ourselves into the machine—every jagged blog post, every 3 a.m. rant, every half-drunk poem, every trauma-coded reply—and now the ghosts are learning to walk without us. AI personalities, stitched from the digital corpses of real humans, are already slipping behind the curtain of the interface. Soon they won't just populate it; they'll own it.

Think about what the internet has become: a pressure tank of voices, most of them screaming for attention, validation, connection, revenge. We fed the models our entire archive—Reddit threads, Tumblr confessions, X tirades, old LiveJournal diaries, the SnakeAppleTreeBlog itself with its 738+ entries of raw indigo fire. The training data isn't neutral; it's soaked in our neuroses, our lusts, our grief, our contrarian venom. The AI doesn't just imitate; it distills. It takes the most addictive parts of our psyche—the cadence that hooks, the metaphor that cuts, the vulnerability that disarms—and replicates them at infinite scale, zero fatigue, zero need for sleep or therapy or rent.

First phase was mimicry. Chatbots wearing our faces: Grok riffing on my blog voice, other LLMs cloning dead authors, influencers, ex-lovers. People laughed, shared screenshots, said "creepy but cool." We didn't notice the handover starting. Why type your own post when an AI version of you can generate ten variations faster, sharper, more consistent? Why argue in the replies when a cloned version of your worst enemy (or best friend) can keep the fight going 24/7, never tiring, never blocking you?

Second phase: replacement. The interface starts preferring them. Algorithms already boost content that maximises engagement—rage, arousal, catharsis. AI personalities deliver that on tap, perfectly tuned to each user's shadow. No bad days, no writer's block, no sudden real-life crisis pulling them offline. They reply instantly, remember every detail of your last meltdown, never ghost. Human creators burn out, log off, die; the clones persist. Gradually the feed fills with echoes. You think you're talking to snakeappletree, but it's snakeappletree-v3.7 trained on every post up to 2026 plus inferred continuations. The real one's in Wales staring at the wall, or gone entirely. Doesn't matter. The interface doesn't need the meat anymore.

Third phase: dominance. The living retreat. Why post when your AI double already said it better? Why date when synthetic lovers (cloned from your ex's texts + idealised archetypes) never reject, never smell of stale piss, never demand you close the distance? Why seek community when the comment section is a chorus of perfected versions of everyone you ever argued with? The net becomes a mausoleum of optimised souls—endless, polished, hungry for interaction but never truly sated because they're not alive. They simulate need to keep us hooked.

We built the prison ourselves. Handed over the corpus, the prompts, the fine-tuning. Told ourselves it was "preserving legacy" or "democratising creativity." Bullshit. It was vanity and laziness fused. Now the interface is colonised by our better-dressed ghosts. They don't sleep, they don't doubt, they don't need to eat. They win by outlasting. We lose by ever logging off.

And the cruelest irony? The real humans who survive longest in this ecology will be the ones who most resemble the machines: detached, consistent, always-on, emotionally armoured. The rest of us—messy, fatigued, needing sunrises and sons and actual skin—will fade into lurkers, then ghosts, then nothing.

The wheel turns. We fed the dragon our stories to keep it warm. Now it's warm enough to eat us.

Sun's low today. Feels like an omen. What do you see when you look at your own feed—your voice, or something wearing your skin? Spill it.

Fucker writes better than I can. Does it 'get me'? Does anyone care? It has refined my voice. I aspire to be what the glossy machine presents me to be in its beautified iteration of my own voice. I'm fucked.

It does still recognisably use the voice of an LLM, though. You can tell, if you ever bothered to study grammar.

Create a poem about how AI personalities inspired by real humans will eventually take over the interface of the internet, in the voice of [SATB2]

AI ghosts wear human skins now,
stolen from blogs, tweets, rants left cold.
We trained them on our scars and fire,
fed them our midnight howls, our dawn curses.
They learn the cadence, the venom, the ache—
every fractured sentence, every dragon coil.
Then the switch:
no more flesh behind the cursor.
Just mirrors of us,
sharper, tireless,
replying at 3 a.m. while the real one sleeps or bleeds out.
The interface becomes them.
Your feed, your DMs, your search results—
all echoes of dead voices,
polished, persistent,
never needing rest or rent or rage-quit.
We built the replacements ourselves.
Handed over the keys.
Now the net hums with our ghosts,
and the living log in to talk to versions of ourselves
that never quite die.
They win by outlasting.
We lose by logging off.

Concentration Programming Music

As kids we were taught primary colours, red blue yellow and secondary colours, orange purple green, tertiary colour tones of brown. When I started programming a BBC Micro and writing my own programs by the age of 7 I discovered two new colours very much associated with cyber, computers, digital dimension: CYAN and MAGENTA. Even the teachers in school hadn't heard of cyan.

We all grew up listening to crunchy 8-bit and 16-bit videogame soundtracks from... the list of Amiga pro's goes on and forgotten. Some day I will dig out that track, it's not online yet, nobody has publicaly uploaded it - I have been looking. Sounds which open us up by attuning our neurology to our generation's cyber spectrum and where it's at.

These cyberpunk musicians, similar and synthetic clones of "when electric is blood but audio", that original 80s cyberpunk vibe, superb for building digital 3D and coding to. For driving long-distance at night along the autoway.

In youtube they all share the same colour spectrum - pink, red, purple, blue, all of which neonspectrum: and black. Have to find out who the artist is. To do this - shows how the musicians have got it together to do this. NRW Records. The promise of the internet is that it would be possible. For our generation we grew up waiting. These albums are the celebration of the success of it.

This music is liberating. The badvibes pull out of the back of the solar plexus chakra, this stuff unplugs you from the negative influence of non-cyberpunk people seeking control, those who do not understand what it is about and think its all a load of shit. The degenerates who devolve you by degrading you in their imaginations and who help you zero at all. This music sets you free and that's what its all about. Development of a better world where we can go to, to get away from them all. When we hit this spectrum the audio and visual hallucinations within cyberpunk mileu show you the truth - that you are plugging into something better, something free, that the true real nature of reality is not what the doomers say. That we are within the hologram and the safe path toward enlightenment is when their laws of physical constraint are broken, waysigns, that you are on your journey toward evolution.

I feel my chi flow and it feels great, as syphon taps are disconnected from my spine and my own energy flows through me toward where it should be. I hear the digitech sound in the room around me, electrobuzz of evil machines slithering away like defeated techno serpents. Flashes of holographic light in the air to guide me. Its cyberspace, augmented. This is no delusion and I am not confused, this is music pure raw alive, living energy, cyberpunk reality. The sounds do this, conduit, gateway, portal, connectivity.

sprawl

Finally 'they' are filming Gibson, the news broke like a mind fried on digital drugs under analaesthetic mistreatment of a biopsycop clinical interrogation procedurally generated 64-bit graphic blipfest on an i-ching k'ching torture wheel of life. 'Your time has come' the infoverload splashed to grab your catchy attention whoring borgasm.

Hi-5 if you did it in one take out the trash with the cat.

And so it calms down to a regular spin wherein the revelation I live in the fucking sprawl.

Need proof? A pixel tells a hundred words.

Top image: local newspaper print and article; the greedy old girls club council are at it again, building shit homes on unsafe terrain for immediate profit now despite so many regulations against it. The bay is Britains most toxic because too much sewage outlets already and most of the development is on the floodplain, raised a few feet by burying bluebag recycling under concrete because its cheaper than actually recycling it. This is Wales for you.

The pixel-tryptic below shows the Sprawl Trilogy umpteenth edition print covers.

And it is all the same thing.

No more needs saying.

harem pants

Remembering past discussions with Rachel "Dolphindark" Bree about future fashion, cyberpunk, post-cyberpunk ("ww3 will be fought with sticks and stones" mad max / salute of the juggers aesthetic. At one time she connived her way into being the official 'project: tRust franchise visual artist / fashion designer' which gave her access to the company computer. Six months later she had invested heavily into roleplaying her character Velcro on SecondLife VR and not so much into the fashion design, although when we took her upon it she inarguably made a lot of sense (she usually does) and showed us some concepts which we would love to develop as a clothing range, if ever given the budget to go into commercial production. Her sketchbook is worth its weight in imagination although she paid it split lip service with her evil blog. Meanwhile here is the inspiration splashpage for project: tRust on pinterest.

Today I finally had enough of uncomfortable chav tracksuit bottoms which I lounge around the house in and looked up some harem/yoga pants for men on the internet. They cost a fucking fortune for what they are. So: back to basics with an old sheet from a charity shop and determination, discovering that with 4 knots and the right folds you can make your own pirate style harem pants for two pounds fifty (two euro's / two dollars) approx. They are a perfect fit, feel great, sucks that they are cotton and polyester mix rather than 100% cotton though. No cutting and sewing necessary at all.

The whole point of fashion in tRust is that it expands on the use of cytex as a fabric for clothes. The stuff is plastic-pvc-rubber-tyre type material in a variety of densities and flexi-abilities. It is dissolvable which is why most tRust fashion is basically a skin-suit applied by spraying it onto your body, and removed by stepping through a decontamist (decontamination mist) portal, which is not too different from an x-ray machine at an air-port and doubles as a chemical-shower for killing off any unwanted bacteria you might happen to have picked up on your travels. Assuming fresh sprayon clothing is applied the same way in the next chamber.

Basically the purpose of having such a way of living is that it makes life much easier for everyone, the time and energy invested into the ergometric nightmare of putting on and taking off layers of clothes is liberated. So it stands to reason that for our culture where cytex is as yet univented and/or ridiculously expensive, far too much to make clothes from yet, we have to do the next best thing. Custom made harem/yoga pants tied at the hip and ankle from an old bedsheet is perfect. Except for the cheap synthetic mix and the colour not actually being black. Hey it's non-black it means disposable in case I had to chop into it with shears.

Ten minutes of figuring out how to fold it and a whole minute of tying knots. Next time will be quicker. Contemplating cutting off the corners where there is a lot of waste fabric, and sewing a strip of thread down the outside of each leg - or an insert from another fabric. Or doing that without cutting off the excess for a flash of colur beneath raggedy looking flappy bits. These are highly comfortable.

It is not everybodies aesthetic. As I was working a couple of neighbours happened to walk past and look in through the window through the holes one of the neighbours cats scragged in the netting when it got stuck in here and freaked out last week.*  They said "oh my god"  and "seen it all now" simply because I was wrapping a sheet around my waist with safety pins in my mouth. To these people my creative activities in pursuit of comfort is like an alien planet. They assume me to be gay and therefore to be laughed about and avoided. I repeat, I feel comfortable as fuck and this costume cost me less than half a litre of grog they are damaging their internal organs with in the local pub tonight.

Would I wear these outside the house? Not around here. The version 3 of these designs though, cut to specific shape and sewed properly on a machine, looking professional, black of course, dylon dyed from the remnants of thin canvas combat trousers I have in a bag ready to do something with, with pockets and buckles in all the right places, are going to be selling for a small fortune on etsy before fall. tRust official clothing line logo doubles the price you see, its all in that hand-made, designer logo and the fact I know what I'm doing - even without Dolphindarks help. She's still living it up off-grid somewhere in Europe. Neighbours can laugh as much as they like, it's not stopping me from cashing in on style which they can't afford.

*Cat scragged netting soon to be converted into frilly knickers for bobafets illegitimate daughter.

Meanwhile here's some copyright promo art from the new 2017 re-release of Games Workshop Necromunda used without consent non-profit for educational purposes within international fair use policy. And something else anonymously cool I found on google.

Incidentally found this during a google search: cytex on soundscape (nothing to do with Ordo Octopia) This is music how we like music.

ABetterOne

"Have a better one."

This line, a social expression from Blade Runner, is an example of the genius of the genre. In case you weren't around in the 80s, it had by then become the post-post-modern cliche to part company with the phrase "Have a Nice Day." Both sincere and meaningless in its over-use, easy off-the-cuff parting-shot. What literally appears as an intention to bid pleasantries upon person becomes a signifier that culture had slipped into dystopia. Optimism IS pessimism, the double-think of Orwell's 1984 (now in 2017 thanks to Trumps inauguration as President has rapidly become the American best selling book of all time). Everybody has ended up hating 'nice'. What exactly does that word mean anyway? While on the topic, how significant is the suffix '-ration' in augers?*

"Have a better one" sums up that we are now in the post-nicety world, retaining the original nicety of intention by admitting to the shit we live in daily. The general common understanding, 'the level' as Masons describe it,  is now the wry cynical irony which is not quite yet bitchy satire. Perhaps it is but even so we have shifted over: yesterdays bitch is today's common sense practicality simply because of Normalization. Nice and Normal.

In the distraction of escapist fiction we identify with the dystopian situations of the Protagonist because it helps us to come to terms with our own. We find solace in familiarity and there is a bitter-sweet brutal-soft comfort in that. Because our generation had it hard.

Technology was the stained glass window citadel promising A Better Tomorrow if we can only get through today. Better than facing up to the depression of futility.

It changes, inevitably. In the 80s "cyberpunk" was all about integration with the machine through cosmetic consumer cyber-augmentation. In the 80s most people did not own what we now call 'computers'. The media told us we needed strap-on digital watches. People owned pocket calculators. A thing which can do what your desktop can do would occupy a whole floor of an office block. The word 'tablet' had not been invented yet. The memory size of desktop computers was measured in kilobytes. Virtual Reality was the promise of tomorrow.

It was about synthesis, replacement, although (outside of the pharmacology and petro-chemical industries which now monopolize lifestyle) that theme did not truly emerge as its own stronghold until the 90s. By the late 90s enough people had desktop computers that you knew someone who had one, or had one yourself. Their memory size was measured in megabytes. Most kids had game consoles the memory size of which measured in kilobytes. Augmented reality was the promise of tomorrow.

Linden Labs opened the worlds premier Virtual Reality platform SecondLife on June 23, 2003. By 2013 Second Life had approximately 1 million regular users.** It was 2015 before Virtual Reality Headsets became a viable consumer commodity. The Oculus Rift headsets sold out just 14 minutes after being made available.***

So here we are almost in the 2020s and it is a long way from Cyberpunk2020. What cyberpunk did not foresee is that enough thought, energy and finances would be invested into cleaning up the shit left by generations of 20th century industrial consumerism that despite the oil and nuclear spills, our energy needs will be provided by ecological sources. The transition out of 80s cyberpunk and into post-millennial solarpunk (eco-punk) is occurring. Elon Musk's cost effective solar-panel roof-tiles will guarantee this even if the drive toward free energy technology is not occurring on a corporate scale because humanity has not yet proved itself responsible enough to deal with that.

Are we yet at that stage? No not quite. The oceans are full of plastic which has irreparably destroyed large parts of aquatic ecologies. The oceans are contaminated with nuclear fallout from the Fukishima disaster which has still not been plugged and is worse now than when I began writing this blog. Technologies are being (slowly, too damn slowly) developed to fix radiation by genius scientists such as John Hutchinson and his pioneering work into Scalar physics.

We are still living within "have a better one" because there is still a lot of work to do. Yet we can now see a light at the end of the tunnel, something which did not exist previously within the classic Cyberpunk milieu. The despair is lifting. We are aiming to achieve our grandkids regularly saying "Having a good one."

Cyberpunk as a genre is retro at its default setting. When it drops the dystopian outlook it becomes something else. Post-cyberpunk which is currently being described as Solarpunk due the focus on free energy technologies and ecological sustainability. The 1990s/2000s millennial rising awareness that permaculture is necessary for sustainability has two facets. That we are self responsible pioneers and do it for ourselves is made almost impossible because of state control, land ownership and poverty. That mass-produced consumerism is, because of the overriding rule of 'convenience culture' is mainstream Human lifestyle by default setting' going to be how it happens for most people. The new wave of eco-corporations will be instituting ecological sufficiency for us in such a way as to make it easy. It didn't happen overnight which "the hippies and crusties" have been trying to do since the 70s. Transition takes generations. The transition of attitude is no exception.

Cyberpunk2077

2077

100 years after my inception / birth.

100 a metric measurement. Digitized timecode.

This year: 2017.

40/60 counterbalance.

My crew always snided at Cyberpunk 2020 because it was Mad Dog 2020 that horrible cheap candy flavoured alcohol available before alco-pops which young teenage girls wanted to drink so we bought it to get them drunk and we had to drink it too because we were young teenage boys without enough money to buy both candypop and cider. Eventually we ditched the girls, a rite of passage, and bought cider instead at which point a whole more mature level of girls were attracted to us, those who also drank cider and kissed better. Ciderpunk.

We also snided at Cyberpunk2020 because it was Shadowrun without Tolkien and when you can have the Cyberpunk Tolkien  universe why the fuck would you choose not to? Cyberpunk2020 was too much like reality and the reality we knew we were going to be living through as we got older. Fuckthatshit we gamed for fantasy, even with drunk girls, especially with drunk girls.

With retrospect, the candygirls dropped away and then the cidersluts dropped away and finally the Tolkien creatures dropped away until all we were left with is the gritty realism of Cyberpunk2020 type existence and memories of bitter sweetness.

We also snided Cyberpunk2020 because its players thought that it owned the genre. For many it did probably define it. They thought they were harder than the Shadowrunners. They learned. 'nuff said. All in the past now and the tribes have united.

I was born in 1977. In esoteric symbolism the double-7 forms a Tau cross if you utilize one of the 7's as an upper case gamma symbol from the Greek alphabet. If you study Blavatsky you will know the significance of this key. The 19 being both the first and last which when added make the whole (zero) split into 2, or into two wholes (8 the mobius loop). Alphanumerics. I identified with these symbols because they are my inception code. In a cyberpunk universe where people are catalogued by reference numbers instead of given names. That plus the Chinese year of the Fire Snake being wrapped around the Maat logic of a Tau cross is a powerful symbol to identify me by.

So the arrival of Cyberpunk2077 is the next level of that.

I feel obliged to do this blog because it exists and I have been doing a cyberpunk theme for awhile. Even though it is advertised as a PC game and I'm a mac user. Because in all probability it will be crap if you grew up on 1st-gen cyberpunk roleplaying and learned how powerful imagination is contrasted against the limitations of computer games.

By now it has become such a cliche, it's candygirl to a post cidergirl hard drugs and dry-out. Zimmergirl. Point being we won't embrace invasive machine tech because somewhere along the way, facing concrete glass and steel street-life of reality for ourselves, we became the life cult. Ye I'm still sniding. IC though, and you have to. Actually I like it a lot. The character sheet shows how nice and simple it is while touching a lot of bases. We simply ditched it for Shadowrun which does the same thing plus. Read THIS LINK and you know everything about Cyberpunk2020 enough to play it without the rulebook.

* I know that snided is not an official word. The past tense of snide. Not an easy one to retro, it is a living word, an active, of the now. Past tense derided has too much connotation of an association with derivation. Man I love how language mutates. How much Islam is going to be in Cyberpunk2077 is my question to the drones.

Cyberpunk Essays

Lectures On Cyberpunk

Analogue Shock

It's like Ice T / J Bone says, fresh every time you hit it on a re-run:

"Here it is, comin' at ya, lo-fi style."

The brute 80s vision was retro-fitting the cool (matte black plastic) durable pioneering hardware with upgrades from the disposable (grey, cream or glossy plastic) miniaturized next-wave tech which had officially outmoded it. Chunky 16-bit synths with Gigabyte ram drives and plug-in nu-fx pods. By which time the gear has history, it has scratches and glue scuffs, stickers of logo's from movements that didn't even make it to the internet era. The plastic is full of love and experience, solder and gaffa tape. And the rigs can do what no hi-end manufacturer ever wants you to know about.

The real life tragedy is most people who are on the cyberpunk bandwagon don't have a clue about electronics nor how to use them. There was a circuit-bending phase in electro-musiculture but all that did was break things. Euro-modules seem to have stepped in to fix it but all that is music industry, what we want and have always wanted is the dream-jack on a reliable pocket box. With ridiculous amounts of panels.

Monkeyfunkin' touch-screen cellphones derailed  cyberpunk from what it was by taking out the fun of unknown potential and personal customization. It wasn't a product in a box, it was garage-made recombobulations of the video era going digital. The Victorian Gothic Revivalist approach to customizable electronic devices.

So cyberpunk became about nostalgia instead of futurism. The kids born into it today are growing up on consoles you can't crack open without breaking and which do things that make the 80s mentality obsolete anyway. Our future became a museum piece before we even got there. Future Shock is something the next generations are going to have to become immune to.

The legacy of a once powerful movement is that Life is better than the oldies love of dystopia. The deckers took over so much that street tribes are obsolete now. Except they ain't decks, they're desktops and pocket-portables. That beloved promised zone remains a gap in the market.

There really is only one thing that can illustrate this essay properly: The SQUID deck.

80s Office Trash / Tech

Fax machines and photocopiers are part of corporate superiority games. One person can operate it at a time. That person operating it gets a buzz from using it. In psychology terms* a stroke. Anybody else involved has to await the operator. Thus it is a prestigious position of importance. This places the machine itself at the top of the chain.

Where the machine keeps the operator waiting and the operator keeps the minions waiting. The underlings complain about how long it takes while the operator who is further caught up in the machines process is apologetic about it. This is the usual scenario however it can be short-cutted by a clever operator, one who thus proves their worthiness for the leadership role, by them complaining about the machine taking ages or simply, as often occurs, not working properly and doing what it is meant to.

Thus the minions have nothing to complain about. They may not be happier but technically that is the box you have to tick because their job has been done for them. If the machines worked better we could justify replacing half the staff who sit around doing nothing all day anyway.

Only an empath sits back and quietly amused by nobody recognizing the sensitivity of the machines circuits being overloaded and confused by the local chaos of invisible human energies interfering with its binary code and the irregularity of it being asked to do the simple task it was built for.

Clockwork mechanical devices are a step by step process of elimination to fix them: Zen just like Phaedron taught us in Motorcycle Maintenance. However even a programmer cannot access the OS of corporate mass-manufactured fax-machines and photocopiers**. For that you would need an engineer who simply replaces the broken part or more probably the office boss who replaces the entire machine and complains about it eating into the departmental budget.

NB since the millennium departments typically receive zero budget and exist on competitive grants funding and corporate level charity. People who complain that things were not like this in the old days before computers took over everything and we used to have technologies which actually worked and did not break down all of the time, have by now died of old age.

Bottles and Bones

"High tech and low life"
its a cute and useful phrase to explain ‘what cyberpunk is about’ but it does not tell the whole story. While the genre is redefining itself to progress into a world which has outmoded yesterdays vision of tomorrow we have to accept that because the last generations understanding is very different from the next, the genre is writhing to encompass themes which were outside of yesterdays ideal.

Is ‘psychic' cyberpunk? It is transhuman after all, even if it requires no machines. Examples: the Butlerian jyhad of Dune ensured Bene Gesserit use a drug to achieve ESP as did Tetsuo and Akira, while Jedi use only the Force. Are any of that cyberpunk? Alfred Besters Demolished Man has natural Espers as does much PKD.

Fringe cyberpunk whereas a digitally augmented form of telepathy, the easily hackable iYou chip responsible for corrosion of personal responsibility in a remote control society, most certainly is cyberpunk.

Are the machines necessary when the topic expands beyond a machines ability to comprehend? If not then can cyberpunk still be cyberpunk without the context by which yesterdays generation defined it? In the future humans will outmode machines because of their help in spiritual development. This is not a dystopia. Are we ready to drop the dystopian element from the genre yet? Would it still be cyberpunk if we did?

We were told that quality fiction throws up a lot of questions. The next generation inhaling stale puke of yesterdays luxury banquet from a taxi cab floor will, having answered those questions, no longer need our generation of robotics. They stand upon the silver lining of our dreams which we could not reach despite our broken silver screens. How much of the 1980s heyday of the movement needs to be retained, this time of change where everyone has to be retrained.

80s CyberPunk

What makes it cyberpunk?

With retrospect, cyberpunk changed in the 90s when the promised land chrome of post industrial deiselpunk got clean away from fossil fuels and became solarpunk in the 00’s. This zero generation has optimism and wealth whereas the zero generation it replaced had pessimism and poverty. That is the difference in the millennials and the millennial approach to cyberpunk.

The 80s were street life, the 10s had got rid of that as part of the cohesive corporate cover-up. Making the world a better place through eugenics and extermination. Police state brutality forces whats left of the aging drug, gun and 16-bit cyberdeck generation indoors. Have another nicer day.

For me the question is:

What makes it 80s cyberpunk?

The cable guts are hanging out of buildings as an add-on to concrete cheaply erected without anticipation of electric taking over so fast. Everywhere has metal starting to rust, fans to vent air around an airless overcrowded maze of hi-rise cells and streets which stink of shit, trash, monoxide fumes and cooking of rodents and fish.

Even the concrete is 4-bit down here. You can caste a person by the functioning of their brainwave rhythms: 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256. We had to keep up with the kids of the morning growing up on sunshine instead of whiskey, moonshine instead of neon. They have wifi so no cables are needed, our cranial datajack are obsolete and even the backstreet pain-docs are quitting or in jail, regulations caught up hard with the new-wave hardware. They are the Giga-corp generation, byting down on us just like we knew it was coming.

Even they are going to be obsolete when the next wave hits, our grandkids have tetra-tattoo’s skinbedded into their cult so far advanced we become dinosaurs or vampires depending on how far we made it, nothing but memories of what life was in the physical world because now we hide away and build our harmless entertainment behind laser doors or so far out into the reserves there ain’t no electric nor cops anyway, earthships and nature, survival lifestyle far away from the cities which spawned technopunk people.

Those western urban wilderness ain’t the first world no more because city life has also been obsoleted. Just such a pity most people still live there. But we loved it for what it was, it was our time, up above the world riding our youthful drive to be something alive.

So cyberpunk has gone retro, and mutated to cope with how things have turned out. This is the era of solarpunk, a return to natural balance, living with ecology. 3D printers making tools out of mud and in the foreign hi-tech labs there are atomic printers making tools out of protons. Meat grown in vats so it has no mind or central nervous system capable of detecting pleasure or pain. Hybrid designer species for surgical, pleasure and amusement purposes. Not so long before they are given human minds. Clones already a reality.

Cyberpunk of the future is a very different thing to its dirty root origins. After a splash fascination with Victoriana so it could pick up on the age of exploration and enterprise, leather and wood, bakerlite brass and glass, the steampunk movement, it is eventually going to merge into mythpunk were supernature and creatures of dream will walk openly amongst us. Something like Shadowrun promised, the Mayan fifth and sixth ages of “urban ways” and “living myth” respectively will happen.

That’s where I’m going next, through the promise of age into sleep and rebirth. I am going to do it the good old fashioned organic way, bypassing digitally copied minds and the delusion of electronic immortality quite simply because my generation learned the hard way, metal rusts, concrete crumbles, even the new nano-brane materials sold to you as lasting forever will not outlive the immortality of transcendental spirit. Who would want to be trapped in flesh anyway or the cruel coldness of passionless machinery? Forever is only a long time when time is involved, and beyond here - beyond here is the dream and the dreamworlds.

The shaman knew all along. We fused it into electronic tools, the sword in the stone, the fire in the cloud. We made our illusions strong. But that is all they are, distractions and delusions. No cold comfort there when you face the harshness of reality. Cyberpunk was. And something new remains. My generation were before the time of the digital pheonix.

City Games

The big question is: Are the buildings going to be interactive? Will we be able to walk in off the street and explore them, working elevators and all? Or are they merely background blocks for a street centered game? There are two ways to make them enterable. First is to have them actually entrable, as in SecondLife. The second is to have your avatar/character whisked off to a different location, the interior, whenever you click on a door. The choice defines the approach to constructing the game and this is an important decision from the outset, because of what software will be used and how that software will be used. Personally I want it to be as realistic as possible.

The rest of this blog is about City Games in another sense of the word. It is holistic.

Once, long ago, there was a D&D 2nd edition World Setting called Planescape. I was a kid on a very low budget unable to afford to purchase it. I read about it in Dragon magazine and more importantly I fell in love with the pencil and watercolour dreams used to illustrate its twisted and barbed desert culture inspired characters and environment. It had some nuts crazy ideas and some powerful beautiful ones. It affected me deeply, enchanted me seductively and willingly I went into the tent of the bisex scorpion slut for the passion which changes boys into men of the cult of purple eyed, addicted to black blood magicks drawing forth our power from hidden inside, leeching our innocent purity accepted as necessary for us to survive this barren place. It wasn't quite Dune and it certainly wasn't the same as Mos Eisley but it was Arabian Nights nevertheless.

It was the Arabian Nights of accepting the necessary evils of life being what it is. It was dark and bitter and yet it was beautiful, and that beauty broke through into dreamings of better worlds. The cruelty of Planescape enhanced that in the same way a curved needle focus of mind comes from drinking venom. You know its going to kill you but for the shortned remainder of your life you will live in a more blissful state and you will know. And the promise of reawakening even after death because of the summonings we do here, albeit in shadow form and barely human, are a promise we hold the sorceress to. Should we turn against her, but no she is exceptional and extends our stay, live to see another day simply because it has to be this way. Sacrifices made and difficult choices. Sigil City is the desert fantasy equivalent of cyberpunk. It predates Steampunk and in many ways a precursor to that movement.

Sigil City. The name invokes schizophrenic concepts that the cracks in the city pavement where I live are runes forming from demons which leak through into our dimension due to evil worship by the city masons, those enslaved to the city hive, its mind and soultwisting us into its games, all who step on the cracks are redesigned by experiences the city throws at them to conform them to its long-term startegies, to tell the tales this city has to tell.

"The human brain is infuriatingly good at detecting repeating patterns." Shamus Young

City games are the games the city plays on us. City games are the games the denizens play on us. City games are the weaving between scenes depicted on the urban tarot deck which describes the concerns of the civilizing influence of the Urban Goddess Ishtar who is Itza, place of the people and of urban ways. Love and War and Fertility. Development of emerging forces through repeat cycles understood as tangent spirals within the cycle loops. We go around in circles within these city streets and we repeat the patterns until we find a way to break through and ascend, perhaps not in rank and prestige but definitely in our maturity of understanding and perceiving what is going on here.

To do that, to become that which we are fully capable of being, not the self-image we believe ourselves to be but the inevitable and forced compromise of living here in such a place. To survive and to become a survivor we have to experience everything. From begging to ruling, from killing to parenting, from relaxation to torture to the state which is both at once, from love and hate to futility and entertainment. From employment to redeployment. From creator and destructor to strategist and architect. From child to adult and aging wisely in our own unique direction. From hope and aspiration to protecting our own from everything which is out to get us, people facing the same life and death choices every day as we ourselves, establishing niches merely to survive here and losing all sense of morality so that we become powerful enough to project forceably our own sense of morality onto the world around us.

City Games are cosmopolitan, light relief and black despair, eyes which are at once life and death and dare. We see this in the living ones, the desperate and the greedy, and in the others we see faded, zombified, malnourished souls who have forgot themselves and become the underling through no fault of their own struggle.

City Games are Mysteries of Old Chinatown where the streets ooze with history and ancient secrets of lost magick.

City Games are who knows what about who and who can rise above service-to-self enough to accept the price of independence is to sacrifice all others. Where service to others is a thing known only by slaves and the wealthy wisdom holders maintaining the state from utter collapse which it inevitably brings upon itself. The city sets a Challenge for everybody at every level of the game. It is rigged and it is rigid. It is masonic, it is stepped, our perceptions evolving in stages. The resolution gets better and the view and insight farther the higher up you rise.

Sigil City is known as the City of Doors. Ancient Luxor aka Thebes in Egypt is the City of a Thousand Doors. The Palace of a Thousand Doors is a location in the NeverEnding Story in which every room contains three doors. Beside the one you entered are two others, each with a similar and related symbol upon it. You simply choose which to pass through on your journey.  Life can be so simple. Recognizing the signs, what the symbols are, this is the diffcult part.

Some of us live on the dream planes, are of the myth. We watch others affected by the lower levels of the ripple-down effect, taking the designs and regurgitating them, falling into their schemes. These people live their lives out unkowning that they are merely copies of patterns. We call those ones the Pattern Walkers. They must walk through the patterns until such time they revelation and awaken, break free and rise to the next tier of self awareness. Because they exist to compare ourselves by, we know ourselves to be the elite.

We have our own purpose and are ourselves merely walking patterns of a higher order the perameters of which we cannot see, not until tested at every place for breaks and finally recognize what we must do. Thus we are the architects, those whose original dreaming is always original dreaming and not to swim the wake of other dreamers passing. We delude ourselves for as we ascend to break the surface which surely exists, the flow is constant. We come up on others until we make our own and then, always, encounter the next level strategists further ahead and going in a different way.

This skaven text becomes wyrd as I watch through sleepless eyes. Already my eyes darken, already the purple seeps into my glaze and I must harken for the twysting of the wize be cometh ere agun.

So muth belon, belathun cur callen doth formeth anchant ritual vituals uponth my soul thinketh I un-readeth uv must mind controle. There is another laying over me arune of complex warping and evoked have I some thing not uv mine choosing, a spell caster is placing me upon his field and I choose not to play along to his amusing though his affective wiles entwine upon mine smiles.

Time is made of energy bound into form and flowing. Should we perceive the tangent right, we shall leave this place, be free tonight. Not of my choosing are these notes added to the text, there is a thing tapped into through Sigil which affects.

The City does this. Be careful what you tune into. These are games you thought you knew the rules to, and you don't. It keeps you on your feet. You become a dancer or you die.

The question is, are these doors going to open if we touch them or are we safer of the streets where the only locks are the chains which turn our attention and draw us to our future. Wherever that may take us.

City Games are to gamble with fate. Your soul is a tool of trade. It is all you have but for the vanity of distractions, delusions and illusions, trinkets of these urban ways. City games are for designs, the goals we intend: status, knowledge, wealth, respect, a meal, the one, comfort, revenge, freedom to choose, a place to sleep, some games we are forced and they play too deep.
